Then my mother shocked me. She said, All those things you want from your relationship, Liz? I have always wanted those things, too. In that moment, it was as if my strong mother reached across the table, opened her fist and finally showed me the handful of bullets she'd had to bite over the decades in order to stay happily married (and she is happily married, all considerations weighed) to my father... Continuing with this unprecedented string of intimacies, my mother said, You have to understand how little I was raised to expect that I deserved in life, honey. Remember- I come from a different time and place than you do.
One of the problems of contemporary culture is that life moves at such a quick pace, we usually don't give ourselves time to feel and listen deeply. You may have to take deliberate action to nurture the soul. If you want to increase your soul's bank account, you may have to seek out the unfamiliar and do things that at first could feel uncomfortable. Give yourself time as you experiment. How will you know if you're on the right track? I like Rumi's counsel: 'When you do something from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.'

They flank me-Depression on my left, loneliness on my right. They dont need to show their badges. I know these guys very well... then they frisk me. They empty my pockets of any joy I had been carrying there. Depression even confiscates my identity; but he always does that.
You must stop looking at the world through your head. You must look through your heart, instead. That way, you will know God.

The face, which, duly as the sun, rose up for me with life begun, to mark all bright hours of the day with hourly love, is dimmed away — and yet my days go on, go on.

There is one thing higher than Royalty: and that is religion, which causes us to leave the world, and seek God.
There’s a trick to the 'graceful exit.' It begins with the vision to recognize when a job, a life stage, or a relationship is over — and let it go. It means leaving what’s over without denying its validity or its past importance to our lives. It involves a sense of future, a belief that every exit line is an entry, that we are moving up, rather than out.
Thank God, I say, for while I love you so, With that vast love, as passionate as tender, I feel an exultation as I know I have not made you a complete surrender. Here is my body; bruise it, if you will, and break my heart; I have that something still. You cannot grasp it
Feast, and your halls are crowded fast, and the world goes by succeed and give, and it helps you live but no man can help you die.
Did I not feel that the time has come for the questions of women's wrongs to be laid before the public? Did I not believe that women herself must do this work, for women alone understand the height, the depth, the breadth of her degradation.

It is easy enough to define what the Commonwealth is not. Indeed this is quite a popular pastime.

We get no good by being ungenerous, even to a book, and calculating profits--so much help by so much reading. It is rather when we gloriously forget ourselves, and plunge soul-forward, headlong, into a book's profound, impassioned for its beauty, and salt of truth—‘tis then we get the right good from a book.

Happiness must be cultivated. It is like character. It is not a thing to be safely let alone for a moment, or it will run to weeds.
For an actress to be a success, she must have the face of Venus, the brains of a Minerva, the grace of Terpsichore, the memory of a Macaulay, the figure of Juno, and the hide of a rhinoceros.

It seems incredible, and I love them no less; and I can say that I would rather die than see any diminution of it on one side or the other.

They don't take the Bible as a general thing, sailors don't; though I will say that I never saw the man at sea who didn't give it the credit of being an uncommon good yarn.

The world's male chivalry has perished out, but women are knights-errant to the last; and, if Cervantes had been greater still, he had made his Don a Donna.
I like the roar of cities. In the mart, where busy toilers strive for place and gain, I seem to read humanity's great heart, and share its hopes, its pleasures, and its pain.
